How to Choose the Right IBC Tote

Selecting the ideal IBC tote depends on what you are storing, your regulatory requirements, budget constraints, and how many units you need. Follow this guide to narrow down the best option for your situation.

1

Identify Your Contents

Start with what you plan to store. Food-grade liquids (edible oils, juices, syrups) require FDA-compliant totes with documented chain of custody. Hazardous chemicals need UN-certified containers. Non-hazardous industrial fluids, water, and agricultural products work with standard reconditioned totes in any grade.

2

Check Regulatory Requirements

Different industries have specific container mandates. Pharmaceutical manufacturing often requires new, first-use containers. International shipping may demand UN 31HA1 certification. Food processors may need FDA documentation. If regulations require new totes, reconditioned is not an option — but for most applications, reconditioned delivers identical performance.

3

Determine Volume & Size

The 275-gallon tote is the industry standard with the best availability and pricing. Choose 330-gallon for 20% more capacity on the same footprint. The 550-gallon is ideal when you need maximum volume and have adequate vertical clearance. Consider your storage space, forklift capacity, and throughput requirements.

4

Select the Right Grade

Grade A (like new) for food-grade and customer-facing applications. Grade B (good condition) for chemicals, agriculture, and industrial use. Grade C (fair condition) for waste, rainwater, non-critical storage, and repurposing projects. All grades are structurally sound and fully functional.

5

Plan for Accessories

Consider what accessories you will need: specific valve types for your dispensing setup, adapters for your piping system, liners for product protection, heating blankets for temperature-sensitive materials, or dust covers for outdoor storage. Ordering accessories with your totes saves on shipping.

6

Calculate Your Budget

Factor in the total cost of ownership: purchase price, shipping, accessories, and ongoing maintenance. Reconditioned totes at $30-$150 deliver the best value for most applications. New totes at $200-$550 are justified when regulations demand it. Volume discounts start at 10 units and increase significantly at 50, 100, and 500+ units.

Volume Savings

Bulk Ordering Benefits

The more IBC totes you order, the more you save per unit. Our tiered volume pricing rewards businesses that buy in quantity, whether you need a one-time large order or an ongoing supply agreement. Every volume tier also includes additional perks beyond the per-unit discount.

We support orders of any size, from single units to full truckloads of 60+ totes. For businesses with recurring container needs, our scheduled delivery programs ensure you always have inventory on hand without managing procurement cycles.

Dedicated Account Manager

Orders of 50+ units are assigned a personal account manager who handles all quotes, scheduling, and quality coordination.

Priority Inventory Access

High-volume customers get first access to newly reconditioned inventory, especially for high-demand Grade A and food-grade units.

Flexible Delivery Scheduling

Split large orders across multiple delivery dates at no extra charge. Receive totes as you need them rather than all at once.

Quality Assurance

Our Quality Inspection Process

Every IBC tote that leaves our facility — reconditioned, new, or repurposed — goes through a rigorous multi-point inspection. Here is exactly what we check before a tote is approved for sale.

Structural Integrity Check

The HDPE bottle is inspected for cracks, punctures, thin spots, and UV degradation. We use backlighting to detect micro-cracks invisible to the naked eye. Any bottle showing structural compromise is rejected and routed to material recycling.

Steel Cage Assessment

Every cage bar and weld point is examined for rust-through, bent tubes, broken welds, and structural deformation. The cage must maintain its square shape under load. Minor cosmetic dents are acceptable in lower grades, but structural damage is a failure.

Valve & Seal Testing

Valves are cycled open and closed multiple times to verify smooth operation and complete shutoff. Gaskets are inspected for wear, chemical damage, and compression set. Any valve that leaks a single drop under test pressure is rebuilt or replaced.

Pallet Integrity Verification

The pallet base is tested for forklift entry clearance, structural load capacity, and surface condition. Cracked plastic pallets, rotted wood, and bent steel pallets are rejected. Every pallet must support a full tote load stacked two-high.

Pressure & Leak Testing

Totes are filled with water and pressurized above normal operating conditions. We monitor for leaks at every potential failure point: bottle seams, valve thread connections, cap seal, and any repair sites. This test is the final pass-fail gate.

Documentation & Grading

Totes that pass all inspections are photographed, assigned a grade (A, B, or C), tagged with a unique tracking number, and entered into our inventory system. Every unit has a digital inspection record available to the buyer on request.

Sustainability First

Every Reconditioned Tote Saves the Planet

Choosing reconditioned or repurposed IBC totes is one of the most impactful sustainability decisions a business can make. Each reconditioned tote prevents approximately 25 kg of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere, conserves over 80 gallons of water, and diverts 55 cubic feet of non-biodegradable material from landfills.

Our closed-loop reconditioning process reuses every component possible. The steel cage and pallet can last 10+ years. HDPE bottles go through 3-5 reconditioning cycles. When a tote finally reaches end-of-life, we separate every material for recycling — nothing goes to waste.

Frequently Asked Questions About Buying IBC Totes

What is the difference between Grade A, B, and C reconditioned totes?
Grade A totes are in like-new condition with clean, clear bottles, straight cages, and new or near-new valves. They are suitable for food-grade applications. Grade B totes have light staining and minor cosmetic imperfections but are fully functional for chemicals, agriculture, and industrial use. Grade C totes show noticeable wear — staining, dents, scratches — but are structurally sound and ideal for waste collection, rainwater harvesting, and repurposing projects. All three grades pass the same structural integrity and pressure tests.
How many IBC totes fit on a standard truck?
A standard 53-foot dry van trailer accommodates approximately 60 empty 275-gallon totes stacked two-high. For 330-gallon totes, capacity is around 48 units, and for 550-gallon totes, approximately 30 units per trailer. For smaller quantities (1-10 totes), LTL (less-than-truckload) shipping is the most economical option. We provide detailed freight quotes within 24 hours of inquiry.
Do you ship to all 50 states?
Yes. We deliver to every state in the continental US via our dedicated fleet (Midwest region) and LTL/FTL freight carriers (nationwide). We also ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico — though these destinations require additional lead time and may incur higher shipping costs. Local pickup from our South Milwaukee, WI facility is always available at no shipping cost.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No. We sell individual totes and welcome single-unit orders. That said, volume discounts begin at 10 units and become increasingly attractive at 50, 100, and 500+ units. For businesses with recurring needs, we offer scheduled delivery programs where we ship a set quantity on a regular schedule at your locked-in volume price.
How do I know if I need a food-grade tote?
You need a food-grade tote if the contents will be consumed by humans or animals, or will come into direct contact with food products. This includes edible oils, juices, syrups, flavorings, potable water, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical ingredients. Food-grade totes are manufactured from FDA-compliant virgin HDPE and have documented chain of custody verifying only food-safe contents were previously stored. If your application involves chemicals, agricultural products, or non-consumable materials, a standard (non-food-grade) tote is appropriate.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), ACH bank transfers, company checks, wire transfers, and purchase orders (POs) from established business accounts with approved credit. Net-30 terms are available for qualified commercial customers with a credit application on file. For large orders (50+ units), we can arrange custom payment schedules.
