A Mission Born in the Midwest
Every year, millions of intermediate bulk containers reach what manufacturers consider “end of life.” Most are structurally sound. Their HDPE bottles can hold liquid for another three to five cycles. Their steel cages are barely scratched. Yet they end up crushed, baled, and buried in landfills because the economics of new production make it easier to discard than to recondition.
We founded IBC Totes Recycle in 2009 because we saw that gap — and we knew it did not have to exist. Starting with a single wash bay and a flatbed truck, we began collecting used IBC totes from breweries, chemical plants, and food processors across southeastern Wisconsin. We cleaned them, inspected them, replaced worn gaskets and valves, and sold them back into the supply chain at a fraction of the cost of new containers.
The response was immediate. Businesses saved money. Landfills received less waste. And we proved that circular economy principles work just as well in industrial supply chains as they do anywhere else. What started as a two-person operation on Blake Avenue in South Milwaukee has grown into a nationwide service with customers in all 48 contiguous states.
In those early years, every tote was washed by hand in a single bay. Our founder personally drove the flatbed to pick up used containers from loading docks across Milwaukee County. There was no automated inspection system, no AI-assisted cameras, no closed-loop water recirculation. Just hard work, a clear vision, and the conviction that keeping good containers out of the landfill was both the right thing to do and a viable business.
By 2012, word had spread. Chemical distributors, food processors, and agricultural suppliers across the Midwest were calling to ask whether we could handle larger volumes. We expanded our facility from 5,000 to 20,000 square feet, installed our first automated wash line, and hired our first full-time logistics coordinator to manage a growing network of pickup and delivery routes.
Today, our facility spans over 60,000 square feet. We process more than 200 totes per day across multiple reconditioning lines. Our team includes environmental scientists, logistics specialists, industrial engineers, and hands-on reconditioning experts. And our mission has never changed: give every IBC tote a second life, reduce industrial waste, and save our customers money in the process.

Triple-stage filtration (coarse screening, activated carbon, UV sterilization) treats all wash water before recirculation or permitted discharge. Rainwater harvesting supplements non-critical pre-rinse stages.
Quality Control Laboratory
An on-site lab performs chemical compatibility testing, residual contamination analysis, and material-property verification. Test results are documented and available to customers on request.
Key Milestones
From a single warehouse to a nationwide recycling and reconditioning operation — here is how we got here.
Humble Beginnings
Founded in a 5,000 sq ft warehouse on Blake Avenue in South Milwaukee, WI. Our first year, we reconditioned just 1,200 IBC totes — every one of them inspected and cleaned by hand. The mission was clear from day one: give industrial containers a second life instead of sending them to the landfill.
First Repeat Customer Contract
Signed our first annual supply agreement with a southeastern Wisconsin chemical distributor — 500 reconditioned totes per year with scheduled quarterly deliveries. That relationship is still active today, now exceeding 3,000 totes annually.
First Major Expansion
Demand from chemical and food-grade manufacturers drove our first facility expansion to 20,000 sq ft. We invested in automated wash systems capable of processing 200 totes per day while reducing water consumption by 60% compared to manual methods.
Buy-Back Program Launch
Launched our formal buy-back program, offering free on-site pickup for used IBC totes anywhere in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. Within 18 months, the program expanded to cover all 48 contiguous states through partnerships with regional carriers.
Nationwide Logistics Network
Launched our dedicated transportation fleet and partnered with regional carriers to offer pickup and delivery in all 48 contiguous states. Bulk customers gained access to scheduled routes and consolidated freight pricing.
Food-Grade Certification Line
Installed a dedicated food-grade reconditioning line with triple-wash capability, temperature-controlled rinse stages, and separate clean-room inspection area. This allowed us to serve food and beverage manufacturers requiring SQF-compatible container handling.
Zero-Waste Certification
Achieved zero-waste-to-landfill status at our primary facility. Every component — HDPE bottles, steel cages, wooden pallets, gaskets, and valves — enters a dedicated recycling or upcycling stream. Nothing is wasted.
10-Year Anniversary & 500K Milestone
Celebrated our tenth anniversary by surpassing 500,000 IBC totes recycled and reconditioned since founding. Hosted an open-house event at our South Milwaukee facility, welcoming customers, partners, and local officials to tour the operation.
Solar Installation & Green Energy
Installed a 340 kW rooftop solar array, generating approximately 40% of our facility's electricity from renewable sources. Simultaneously upgraded all warehouse and office lighting to LED with occupancy sensors and daylight harvesting controls.
One Million Totes Milestone
Surpassed one million IBC totes recycled and reconditioned since founding. This milestone represents over 12,000 tons of plastic diverted from landfills and an estimated 47,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions prevented.
Custom Modifications Workshop
Opened a dedicated custom modifications workshop capable of handling 50+ modification types: valve conversions, heating blanket installations, custom fittings, sight-glass additions, and specialized gasket materials for chemical compatibility.
Advanced Inspection Technology
Deployed AI-assisted visual inspection and ultrasonic wall-thickness testing across all reconditioning lines. These systems detect micro-cracks, UV degradation, and chemical residue at levels invisible to the human eye, raising our quality pass rate to 99.7%.
Fleet Electrification Begins
Began phased replacement of our delivery fleet with electric and biodiesel vehicles. The first three electric flatbed trucks entered service for local and regional routes, reducing fleet emissions by an estimated 15% in the first year.
Meet Our Values
These are not words on a wall. They are the principles that guide every tote we inspect, every route we plan, and every customer relationship we build. Eight values. Zero exceptions.
Environmental Stewardship
Every decision we make starts with one question: what is the impact on the environment? From closed-loop water systems to solar panels on our rooftops, sustainability is not a marketing slogan — it is our operating principle.
Integrity in Every Tote
We grade every container honestly. If a tote does not meet spec, we say so — and we recycle it responsibly. Our customers trust us because we never cut corners on quality or transparency.
Community First
South Milwaukee is home. We employ locally, sponsor youth environmental education programs, and partner with Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce to advocate for sustainable industrial practices across the Midwest.
Continuous Innovation
We reinvest a significant portion of revenue into R&D — from advanced cleaning chemistry that eliminates residues without harsh solvents, to logistics software that optimizes pickup routes and reduces fuel consumption by up to 30%.
Family Values
We are a family-run business, and we treat our team and customers like family. Long-term relationships, honest communication, and doing right by people are not aspirations — they are expectations.
Circular Economy Champions
We do not just recycle — we close the loop. By reconditioning totes for reuse, harvesting components for secondary markets, and converting end-of-life plastics into raw pellets, we keep materials in productive circulation for as long as physically possible.
Safety Without Compromise
Every team member holds DOT hazardous materials certification. Our facility exceeds OSHA standards for chemical handling, spill containment, and fire suppression. Zero workplace injuries is not a goal — it is a non-negotiable expectation that we have maintained for seven consecutive years.
Radical Transparency
We publish our environmental metrics, share our sustainability targets, and provide impact certificates with every order. When we fall short of a goal, we say so publicly and explain what we are doing to improve. Trust is built on openness, and we earn it every day.
Community Involvement
South Milwaukee is more than our mailing address — it is where our team members live, where their children go to school, and where we have built our business from the ground up. We believe that a company's responsibility extends beyond its property line, and we invest in our community the same way we invest in our facility: consistently and with measurable outcomes.
Every employee receives 16 paid hours per year for local environmental volunteering. Our team has participated in Milwaukee River cleanup events, planted trees in city parks, and supported habitat restoration projects along Lake Michigan's shoreline. In total, our staff has contributed over 4,800 volunteer hours since the program launched in 2015.
Education is another cornerstone of our community engagement. We host field trips for middle and high school students, offering hands-on demonstrations of industrial recycling, water treatment, and circular economy principles. Many of these students return as summer interns, and several have joined our team as full-time employees after graduation.
Youth Environmental Education
We host 10-15 school field trips per year, teaching students the science and economics of industrial recycling. Topics include HDPE chemistry, water treatment, carbon accounting, and supply chain logistics.
Milwaukee River Cleanup
Our team participates in the annual Milwaukee Riverkeeper cleanup, removing debris and trash from waterways that flow into Lake Michigan. We have contributed over 1,200 volunteer hours to river restoration since 2016.
