Understanding IBC Tote Sizes

Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) are manufactured in standardized sizes that align with global pallet and logistics systems. The three most common sizes in North America are the 275-gallon, 330-gallon, and 550-gallon models. All share the same 48" x 40" pallet footprint, making them compatible with standard forklifts, pallet jacks, racking systems, and truck configurations.

This guide provides the detailed specifications you need to plan storage layouts, calculate transport loads, verify building clearances, and select the right size for your application. All dimensions are nominal values; actual measurements may vary by up to 1" depending on the manufacturer.

Most Popular

275-Gallon IBC Tote (1,040 Liters)

The 275-gallon IBC tote is the industry standard in North America, accounting for approximately 70% of all IBC totes in circulation. Its dimensions are optimized for standard 48" x 40" pallet logistics, making it the most versatile option for storage, transportation, and dispensing applications.

  • Chemical storage and distribution
  • Food-grade liquids (oils, syrups, juices)
  • Agricultural chemicals and fertilizers
  • Water treatment and storage
  • Cleaning products and detergents
  • Pharmaceutical intermediates

Transport Notes

  • Fits 20 units per 53' dry van (single layer)
  • Up to 40 units double-stacked (if empty or lightly loaded)
  • Standard forklift pockets: 4-way entry
  • DOT-compliant for non-hazmat liquids; UN certification available for hazmat
Extended Capacity

330-Gallon IBC Tote (1,250 Liters)

The 330-gallon tote provides roughly 20% more capacity than the standard 275-gallon model while maintaining the same 48" x 40" pallet footprint. The additional height (approximately 7" taller) makes it the preferred choice when maximizing volume per floor square foot is a priority. Originally more prevalent in European markets (where the 1,250-liter model is standard), these totes are increasingly common in North America.

330-Gallon Dimensions & Weight

SpecificationValue
Length48" (122 cm)
Width40" (102 cm)
Height (overall)53" (135 cm)
Pallet Height6" (15 cm)
Bottle Height47" (119 cm)
Capacity330 gal / 1,250 L
Empty Weight130 – 165 lbs (59 – 75 kg)
Full Weight (water)~2,885 lbs (~1,309 kg)
Valve Opening2" NPT (standard) / 3" butterfly
Top Fill Opening6" (150 mm) screw cap or 8" lid

Best Applications

  • High-volume chemical processing
  • Beverage ingredient storage (syrups, concentrates)
  • European import/export supply chains
  • Facilities with limited floor space and high ceilings
  • Bulk water storage and distribution

Transport Notes

  • Fits 20 units per 53' dry van (single layer)
  • Double-stacking is possible only when empty due to height
  • Verify ceiling clearance: 106" when double-stacked
  • Weight per load when full: ~57,700 lbs (check axle limits)
Maximum Capacity

550-Gallon IBC Tote (2,082 Liters)

The 550-gallon IBC is a double-height unit that provides nearly twice the capacity of a standard 275-gallon tote while occupying the same floor footprint. These oversized totes are less common but invaluable where vertical space is plentiful and floor area is at a premium. They are typically used in fixed-installation scenarios rather than frequent transport.

550-Gallon Dimensions & Weight

SpecificationValue
Length48" (122 cm)
Width40" (102 cm)
Height (overall)67" (170 cm)
Pallet Height6" (15 cm)
Bottle Height61" (155 cm)
Capacity550 gal / 2,082 L
Empty Weight175 – 215 lbs (79 – 98 kg)
Full Weight (water)~4,765 lbs (~2,161 kg)
Valve Opening2" NPT (standard) / 3" butterfly
Top Fill Opening6" (150 mm) screw cap or 8" lid

Best Applications

  • Bulk liquid storage in warehouses and processing plants
  • Rainwater harvesting and large-scale water storage
  • Agricultural irrigation supply tanks
  • Static dispensing stations for high-volume operations
  • Emergency water reserves and disaster preparedness

Important Considerations

  • Cannot be double-stacked due to height (67" exceeds most trailer interiors when stacked)
  • Verify floor load capacity: full unit approaches 4,800 lbs on a 13.3 sq ft footprint
  • Requires taller doorway clearances (minimum 72" recommended)
  • Fewer units per truckload: ~10 per 53' van

Stacking & Storage Guidelines

Proper stacking is critical for safety, product integrity, and efficient use of warehouse space. IBC totes are engineered for stacking, but there are important limits to observe.

Full Totes (Loaded)

  • Maximum stack: 2 high for 275-gallon and 330-gallon
  • 550-gallon totes should never be stacked when full
  • Ensure bottom tote cage is undamaged and level
  • Align pallet runners directly over bottom cage columns
  • Maximum combined weight on a single stack: ~5,000 lbs
  • Verify floor load capacity before stacking

Empty Totes

  • Maximum stack: 3 – 4 high for 275-gallon and 330-gallon
  • 550-gallon: 2 high maximum even when empty
  • Secure stacks with strapping or shrink wrap for transit
  • Close all valves and caps to prevent nesting debris

Transport & Logistics Planning

IBC totes are designed for efficient freight. Planning your transport loads correctly maximizes cost efficiency and minimizes the risk of damage in transit.

Truck Load Planning

  • 53' Dry Van: 20 totes (275/330 gal) single layer; up to 40 empty double-stacked
  • 48' Flatbed: 20 totes single layer; secure with straps and edge protectors
  • 20' Container: 8 totes (275/330 gal) single layer
  • 40' Container: 16 totes (275/330 gal) single layer

Weight Limits

  • US highway weight limit: 80,000 lbs gross vehicle weight
  • Typical payload capacity (dry van): 44,000 – 45,000 lbs
  • 20 full 275-gal totes (water) = ~48,200 lbs — exceeds payload; plan for 18 totes max
  • Always check specific gravity of your liquid; heavier fluids reduce units per load

Securing Loads

  • Use ratchet straps over the cage (not the bottle)
  • Place load bars between rows to prevent shifting
  • All valves must face inward or toward the front of the trailer
  • Inspect for leaks before and after loading
