Installation Guides
Installing IBC tote accessories correctly is essential for safety and performance. Follow these step-by-step guides for the most common installations. If you need assistance, our technical support team is available by phone or email.
How to Replace an IBC Valve
- 1
Ensure the tote is empty and depressurized. Open the valve to release any residual pressure.
- 2
Place a drip pan under the valve area to catch residual liquid.
- 3
Grip the existing valve body firmly and unscrew it counterclockwise from the bottle outlet. Some valves require a large wrench or pipe wrench.
- 4
Inspect the bottle outlet threads for damage, debris, or old gasket material. Clean thoroughly with a rag.
- 5
Place the new gasket on the new valve body. Apply a thin layer of food-grade lubricant to the threads if the valve is stiff.
- 6
Thread the new valve clockwise into the outlet by hand until snug. Do not overtighten — HDPE threads can strip.
- 7
Fill the tote partially and check for leaks at the valve connection. Tighten slightly if needed.
How to Install an IBC Liner
- 1
Remove the cap from the top fill opening. Ensure the tote interior is clean and dry.
- 2
Unfold the liner and locate the top opening and bottom discharge spout.
- 3
Lower the liner through the top opening, feeding it carefully so it does not snag on the cap threads.
- 4
Spread the liner collar over the top opening and secure it by replacing the cap ring. The liner should hang freely inside the tote.
- 5
Route the discharge spout through the valve opening from inside the tote. This may require removing the valve temporarily.
- 6
Reattach the valve over the liner spout, sandwiching the liner flange between the valve gasket and the bottle outlet.
- 7
Fill slowly with 2-3 gallons of product to verify the liner is seated properly and the discharge connection is leak-free.
How to Set Up a Heating Blanket
- 1
Unpack the heating blanket and inspect the power cord, thermostat probe, and heating surface for damage.
- 2
Wrap the blanket around the IBC tote with the heating element facing the HDPE bottle. Secure with the integrated straps.
- 3
For full-wrap models, ensure the blanket covers at least 80% of the bottle surface for even heating.
- 4
Insert the thermostat probe into the probe pocket (usually located on the inner surface of the blanket).
- 5
Set the thermostat to your target temperature. Start low (80F) and increase gradually.
- 6
Plug into a grounded outlet matching the blanket voltage (120V or 240V). Use a GFCI outlet for outdoor or wet environments.
- 7
Monitor the tote temperature for the first 2-4 hours. Full heating from ambient to target typically takes 12-24 hours.
How to Install a Camlock Adapter
- 1
Identify the thread standard on your existing valve outlet (typically S60x6 or 2" NPT).
- 2
Select the appropriate thread adapter to convert to a camlock fitting.
- 3
Apply 2-3 wraps of PTFE tape to the male threads in a clockwise direction.
- 4
Thread the adapter into the valve outlet by hand, then snug with a wrench. Do not overtighten.
- 5
Connect the camlock fitting to your hose or piping. Pull back the cam arms, insert the adapter, and lock the arms down.
- 6
Open the valve slowly and check for leaks at both the adapter connection and the camlock seal.
- 7
For permanent installations, consider using a thread sealant compound in addition to PTFE tape.

Troubleshooting Common IBC Tote Issues
Before ordering a replacement part, check these common issues and their solutions. Many problems can be fixed with a simple adjustment or inexpensive part swap.
Valve is leaking at the connection to the bottle
Likely Cause
The valve gasket is worn, compressed, or chemically degraded. This is the single most common IBC tote issue.
Solution
Replace the valve gasket ($2-$5). If the valve body itself is cracked or the threads are damaged, replace the entire valve ($15-$45). Ensure the gasket material is compatible with your stored product.
Part Needed
Valve gasket (EPDM, Viton, or silicone) or complete valve
Valve will not open or is very stiff
Likely Cause
Product residue has dried inside the valve mechanism, or the handle pivot is corroded.
Solution
Try working the handle back and forth gently with penetrating lubricant. If the valve remains stiff, replace it. Do not force a stuck valve — you may crack the HDPE outlet.
Part Needed
Replacement valve (butterfly or ball)
Cap leaks when tote is tilted or pressurized
Likely Cause
The cap gasket is worn, missing, or the cap threads are cross-threaded.
Solution
Replace the cap gasket first ($2-$4). If the leak persists, inspect the cap threads and the bottle opening threads for damage. Replace the cap if threads are visibly damaged ($5-$15).
Part Needed
Cap gasket (EPDM) and/or replacement cap
Liquid flows too slowly from the valve
Likely Cause
The valve is partially blocked by product residue, the butterfly disc is not opening fully, or the vent cap is sealed (creating a vacuum lock).
Solution
Clean the valve with hot water. Verify the handle rotates to the full-open position. Switch to a vented cap to allow air to enter as liquid drains. For viscous liquids, upgrade to a ball valve or larger port size.
Part Needed
Vented cap, valve cleaning, or ball valve upgrade
HDPE bottle is bulging or deforming
Likely Cause
Product off-gassing is creating internal pressure, or the tote was filled with a liquid above the HDPE temperature rating (140F / 60C).
Solution
Open the cap to release pressure. Switch to a vented cap to prevent future pressure buildup. If the deformation is due to heat exposure, the bottle may need replacement. Never store liquids above 140F in standard HDPE totes.
Part Needed
Vented cap; possible bottle/tote replacement
Algae growing inside the bottle
Likely Cause
Water and sunlight are the two requirements for algae growth. If the tote stores water or dilute solutions and is exposed to sunlight, algae will grow.
Solution
Block all light from reaching the bottle. Options: use an opaque dust cover, paint the exterior of the cage/bottle, or wrap with UV-blocking material. Clean the tote with a bleach solution (1 tsp per gallon) and flush before refilling.
Part Needed
Dust cover (opaque) or UV wrap
Extend Tote Lifespan with Preventive Maintenance
The most cost-effective approach to IBC tote management is preventive maintenance. Replacing a $5 gasket on schedule prevents a $150 tote replacement. A $30 dust cover can add years to outdoor tote life by blocking UV degradation.
We recommend building a small parts inventory based on your fleet size. For every 10 totes in active use, keep on hand: 2 replacement valves, 10 valve gaskets, 5 cap gaskets, and 2 replacement caps. This ensures you can address issues immediately without waiting for parts to ship.
Recommended Maintenance Schedule
After Each Use
Rinse tote within 24 hours. Inspect valve seal. Check cap threads.
Monthly
Inspect for UV damage and structural issues. Test valve operation. Check pallet integrity.
Quarterly
Replace valve gaskets if worn. Full cage inspection. Test cap seal under pressure.
Annually
Complete reconditioning assessment. Replace dust covers. Evaluate tote for retirement or reconditioning.
